I'm at BYU!

My first blog!!!! Mom should be proud! So I made it through my first week of classes here at the "Y". It was such a completely new experience. Let’s just do a little comparison of my previous college verses BYU. The first day of classes at Chaffey (previous college) would consist of walking in and sitting down without talking or looking at anyone. The teacher usually tells you how you’re all going to fail, and then proceeds to try and make jokes that no one laughs at. At BYU they do things a little differently. I walked into my first class (chemistry) to the sounds of The Beatles Best Of cd with everyone around smiling and introducing themselves. The teacher then introduced himself and told various jokes that all the girls giggled at.... I felt like I was in a seminary video. The rest of my classes were very similar except they additionally consisted of an opening prayer and hymn. My teachers all gave the opening prayers for the first day of class and prayed that we would all succeed in the class. These are just some of the examples I can give to show what a new and amazing experience I'm having up here at BYU.

I feel so incredibly lucky to be at this great university, around great people, learning great things. All I knew before I got here was that there were things I needed to
experience here that I couldn’t experience back at home. I see now what a gift it is to be here and all the possibilities of growth and learning. Today as I sat in the Marriot center listening to President Monson and Elder Wirthlin speaking before me, I felt grateful that my Heavenly Father would have me here, and I pondered on the wonderful experiences that are yet to come.

So if anyone is wondering if I like it up here...Yes! Of coarse socially I'm still transitioning. I haven’t formed a "posse” yet, and I definitely miss my friends in California, but I must say that there are so many different kinds of people here. I expected the typical Utah people (no offense to anyone from Utah...), but there are people from all over, with all differen
t testimonies and back rounds. I feel like my opportunity to meet knew people has grown immensely, of coarse statistically the numbers have gone up greatly, but there’s also such a diverse group of people up here. I can’t even begin to express the feelings I have as I soak up this incredible atmosphere, but hopefully you’ve at least been able to feel how happy I am to be here.

Love yah,

Karen Nicole
